SEPTEMBER RUNDOWN + ANNOUNCEMENTS
Hello, Asgard! September is going to be a doozy of a month event-wise, so please take a moment to turn your eyes here. There is going to be a plot that runs for the entire month, involving Thiazi choosing targets out of characters in game and polluting Asgard's network with corrupted magic. This plot has the potential to be very dark, so there will also be a simultaneous opt-out event, where characters can travel to Vanaheim with Freyr and Freya. September will also feature a more lighthearted event at the beginning of the month.
Alright, let's get this party started!
First, a few very quick announcements:
1) The Activity Check is up for the month, and you have until September 2nd at 11:59PM to post! The Monthly Test Drive has thirty characters in it this month! Please poke your head in and take a look -- many people use these threads to determine how well they might fit into a game's setting, or as one of their sample links. Tryt o do your part to make them feel welcome!
2) The results are in from the house contest! Large baskets of lavish chocolate treats and pranks (whoopie cushions, fake mustaches, disappearing ink) will appear in the rooms of the following winners: Sandy's (
morethandream) will come with a ribbon reading "Highest Victim Toll"; Tony Stark's (
modernmarvel) will read "Most Embarrassing"; and Steve Rogers's (
exloserspromise) will read "Most Creative". Jamie McCrimmon (
bonnypiperlad) will receive a smaller basket filled with a mixture of real and rubber fruit, and his ribbon will read "Good try!"
3) The Holes event featuring the ghosts and reapers was a lot of fun! The ghosts were laid to rest once the Reaper's influence faded, and there are only the few left unaffected still wandering around the carnival. The Reapers themselves were sealed into black star sapphires and affixed to the top of the funhouse mirrors in the carnival; enjoy a new haunting attraction and be careful not to break the mirrors!
Remember: A new item or feature from a world can be introduced every month, so we will open up submissions for what will arrive in September! Please submit any ideas you might have in the appropriate comment section below, and remember to track the !holes tag for any information relevant to these events!
And now, September's events! Your calendar is, as always, over here! Be mindful of the dates, however, as we didn't mark the entirety of the month-long events. A quick TL;DR for the plot event is included at the end of this post for reference, followed by an opt-out event for those that do not wish to participate in the darker plot.
SPECIAL EVENT: FRUITS OF OUR LABOR - SEPTEMBER 6-9
Summer is ending! Autumn brings cooler weather and, on Day 322 (Friday, Sept 6) apple trees will sprout to full bloom all over the city. These trees will vary in size (some may be very very tiny and others quite enormous!) There is little rhyme or reason to where they will grow, so don't be surprised to find one popping up right in the middle of your bedroom. (As a note: these trees will not cause any damage and, at the very worst, may just make a mess with falling leaves.)
Each tree will sprout perfectly formed apples of a variety of colors, and the trunk of every tree will be inscripted with the following, colorful words:
Choose Wisely:
Fruit of Knowledge
Fruit of Forgiveness
Fruit of Blessings
Fruit of Chance
The apples will be sweet and delicious. The red apples (the fruit of knowledge) will give characters a brief vision of their futures from home; the green apples (fruit of forgiveness) will prompt characters to be sincerely apologetic for something they have done in their past; the teal apples (fruit of blessings) will grant the characters an item from home (there will be a header for approvals in the comments of this post); and the orange apples (fruit of chance) have a 50/50 chance of either depositing a large sum of money into the character's bank account (think a month's wages) or tasting like a mouthful of rotten fish. The rotten fish taste will linger for the entire day. Yuck!
The trees will last for two IC days (Days 322-323 (September 6-9)) and characters will be able to pick one apple each IC day. Any apples picked must be eaten that day, and characters may not pick the same color apple both days. After picking one, characters will not be able to wrest another apple from the branches, no matter how hard they pull.
On the evening of Day 232 (Sept 9), the trees will all disappear.
Players are welcome to make their own logs and posts, but a catch-all mingle log will go up for this event.
PLOT EVENT: BAD MOON RISING - SEPTEMBER 1-30
Alongside providing an easy, synchronous way to communicate, the Travelers’ bracelets tie their souls to this world. In August, Thiazi attacked the first part of that; in September, she will be attacking the second. She has found a way to worm her magic into the magic of the bracelets, and will finally be showing the rest of her hand by infecting the very souls of some travelers with it over the course of the entire month of September.
At two AM on the night of Day 319 (September 1st), everyone who is asleep will have an odd but vivid dream. It will be nothing that is obviously bad or inherently alarming: in the dream, they will find themselves walking on flat, cold dirt, surrounded by thick green fog. They will find nothing nearby, save for the faint outline of a large tree that neither seems to come any closer or get further away no matter how far they walk in any direction. Eventually, they will smell and taste both smoke and burning wood as the ground beneath their feet turns hard and begins to crack. Their bracelets begin to become uncomfortably and unnaturally warm, and cannot be removed.
Before the warmth crosses the threshold into painful discomfort, they will wake abruptly. Any other dreams that night will be completely normal.
At this point, Thiazi will have chosen her victims.
For this plot, Travelers are going to fall into two categories: the corrupted and the non.
Over the course of the month, both groups of characters will fall prey to similar effects of Thiazi’s dark magic leaking into the network. The exact details and timeline will be laid out below, but characters in the city will, as time progresses, experience odd dreams, have increasingly intense intrusive thoughts, and eventually experience inexplicable time loss and fugue states. Again, these will happen to everyone in the city, and not simply those who have been ‘chosen’ by Thiazi.
The corrupted will consist of between 3-9 characters, chosen by the RNG. Signups and selection for these roles will all be screened. Our goal is that the identity of these "corrupted" characters will remain a secret icly and oocly, so if your character is chosen, please keep it a secret! These characters and their souls will have been targeted by Thiazi directly; she will be, through September, channeling her own tainted magic through the bracelets into them. They will not be aware that this is happening to them. There will be no overt indicators that this is happening – not until Week Three, at least.
We will also be taking signups for victims of the attacks. These characters WILL be killed during the event, and will remain dead for 2 IC days (4 OOC days), since their souls will need to be collected and cleaned by the gods. These comments will also be screened, and victims will be randomly paired with the chosen "corrupted" during Week Four.
Here is a rough timeline of events:
▸ Starting with Week One (Day 320 (September 2)), all characters in the city will begin to have the occasional odd and intrusive thought. These thoughts will be fleeting, but may be uncharacteristically violent. Someone on a dinner date may have the sudden (but easily dismissed) urge to stab their partner with a fork; someone baking cookies may briefly and uncharacteristically wonder what happened if they shoved their roommate into the oven. Again, these will be very easily ignored.
▸ Week Two (Day 323 (September 8) will see the advent of minor auditory and visual hallucinations. The intrusive thoughts will continue to grow more violent and more vivid. While they are still not compelling enough to act on, they will become more common and much harder to simply outright dismiss. Characters will see flashes of shadows and movement from the corners of their eyes when they are alone. They may also hear sounds: faint weeping, the sound of nails scratching on wood, and other unsettling things that will remain entirely at your discretion. By the end of the week, sleep will become difficult for some, as the sounds may become overwhelmingly loud in the dark, and always seem to be worse when one is alone. These sounds and shadows will have no discernible source. Some characters who have never had issues with sleep before will begin to sleepwalk, heading toward the Gate of Fog, but if not stopped they will always awaken on their own before they reach it.
▸ Starting with Week Three (Day 327 (Sept 16)), characters will begin to experience short bursts of lost time. A character may ‘wake up’ standing in front of their sink, washing blood off of their hands after punching a mirror. These fugue states never last longer than half an hour, and characters in them will seem like they are sleepwalking. They do not notice or attack others, but will tend to participate in dangerous or physically destructive behavior. ‘Destructive’ in this sense means that a character may shatter all of the bowls in the kitchen, but they will not outright attack their suitemate. They do not speak in these states and do not use their powers. While they can be restrained, they cannot be ‘woken up’ by someone else.
During this time, bad things will begin to happen at night. The chosen corrupted characters will begin making strikes to the city from the inside, and this may manifest in anything from vulgar graffiti in Odin’s library to violent murder. Much of this will be ‘revealed’ by the mods in some capacity, and further details will come closer to the time of the actual event.
▸ At the beginning of Week Four (Day 330 (Sept 22)), hell will break loose. The chosen corrupted will become completely overcome by Thiazi’s dark magic and will be attempting to take the city down from the inside. They will still be themselves, but corrupted from the core, and their god-given powers will be replaced with a host of different, destructive powers. The gods will announce that these “corrupted” must be killed if there is any hope of salvaging their souls.
This week will involve these characters attacking the city in a way that is to be determined by the chosen players and to be revealed when it is a little closer to time. When they are taken down, the characters will be out of play for two IC days/four OOC days as Hel collects and Sigyn carefully cleans the impurities from their souls. When these characters wake, they will be foggy, disoriented, and hazy feeling for a few days as a result of the soul-scrubbing process. Their souls will be squeaky clean, however, and no amount of the tainted magic will remain.
By Day 334 (Sept 30), the attacks will be over. Characters who left for the trip to Vanaheim will return to the city picking itself up. A short message will appear on each character's bracelet: Eat the Fruit of Clarity. The apple trees from earlier in the month will appear again, blooming early in the morning and bearing a faintly luminous golden fruit by early afternoon. The apples will be tart but tasty, and will leave characters who eat them feeling rejuvenated as the enchantment on them wipes away the remains of Thiazi's foul magic. Those that do not eat them will still have their souls cleaned just by being near them, but the process will be much slower. The trees will last for a few days before disappearing again for good, along with any residue of Thiazi's spell.
If you sign up for this event, please keep in mind that you will need to work with us for quite a bit during the last two weeks of September! Try to make sure that your schedule will be clear and that you will have time to tag around. Please also keep in mind that your character will do some terrible things, and will die as a result of this plot. While these things will happen because of external influence, remember that there may be IC repercussions for this, and characters will retain the memories of the things that they have done.
And the TL;DR, since this is a lot to take in at once:
Week One (09/02-09-07): Characters have unusual but easily dismissed intrusive thoughts.
Week Two (09/08-09/16): The intrusive thoughts become more violent and vivid. Hallucinations and sleepwalking begin.
Week Three (09/16-09/21): Characters begin experiencing mildly destructive fugue states. Attacks on the city at night begin.
Week Four (09/22-09/30): Thiazi's chosen corrupted are taken over completely by the polluted magic and attack the city outright. They must be killed for their souls to be cleansed.
Other Notes:
Players are welcome to make their own logs and posts, but catch-all mingle logs will go up at the beginning of each week.
OPTIONAL PLOT: We’re Taking The Hobbits To Vanaheim - September 8-30
Early on the morning of Day 323 (Sept 8), a thunderous knock will sound through the city coming from the Gate of Fog. An hour later, an envoy of soldiers will march through the gates and directly to the castle; those that were present for the Battle of Ragnarok may recognise their banner as the gods' of Vanaheim. After weeks of deliberation and the many tragedies that have struck Asgard, Njord and Skadi are demanding to see their children.
Freyr will announce to the network that he and his sister are returning to Vanaheim to balm their parents' fears, and will ask any interested parties to help them in their bid to convince the good King and Queen that all is not lost in this war. He will give them until the end of that IC day to decide, and then, on Day 324 (Sept 10), they will depart with the envoy via the floating trains.
This trip will last until Day 334 (Sept 30). During that time, Njord and Skadi will hold various feasts and banquets in honour of both their returned children and the beloved Travelers from other worlds. The NPCs of Vanaheim will all be incredibly kind and accommodating towards the Travelers; in fact, they will be overly so, almost as though they are all pampering and babying them. The twins will try to suffer this in good grace, but holy crap, parents, please stop embarrassing us in front of our friends!
They will start encouraging the Travelers to show their parents features of their worlds, through any means necessary - song, dance, the telling of grand tales while bards from the city improvise dramatic musical accompaniments - or to show feats of their prowess through staged battles, things of this nature. Anything to show the gods of Vanaheim that the Travelers to Asgard are not defenceless and that they know their own worth. Each performance volunteered by the Travelers will help to convince Njord and Skadi that their children's position alongside them is a good one, the right one, and they will allow them to return to Asgard happily.
For this trip, characters will not have access to the bracelet network, but there will be logs set up and small events and prompts by the mods. Those who go to Vanaheim will stop feeling the effects of Thiazi's magic as soon as they are out of Asgard. This acts as both as an IC travel opportunity and an opt-out for the darker half of the event. There will be "signups" for Vanaheim below, though spots for the trip are not limited -- this is just meant to act be more of an indicator of who is going to help facilitate plotting.

Vanaheim is a truly medieval-looking city and a close ally of Asgard. The city prides itself on tradition and knowledge, with great libraries and a prestigious academy of music and theatre. Residents are mostly a mix of human and elven, and the rulers are a group of the same kind of beings as the Gods of Asgard. Freya & Freyr originally hail from this city -- their coming to Asgard was part of a long-ago peace treaty between Odin and their father: the King of Vanaheim.
