JULY EVENT POST + RUNDOWN

Hey, guys! Autumn here with a few quick announcements before we get to July's plot rundown. We're kicking off the fifth (and final game arc), and I hope you're looking forward to it as much as we are! First of all, I'd like to apologize for how late this is being posted. It's the middle of the night for a lot of us, but I thought it'd be best to get the ball rolling ASAP… so here we go!

HELPER MOD APPS;
UPDATE: Thank you to all who applied. Our application turnout for helpstaff was a lot bigger than any of us had anticipated, and so thank you a million million times to all who applied. With that being said-

Everyone, please do me a favor and send your condolences to Nix and TJ: they've been selected as Asgard's new helpteam. (Nix has previously gone through all of the tables and list formatting in the game and updated them, unprompted, just because the messy coding drove him nuts. Now he can just fix it himself!)

They'll mostly just be working in the background to update lists and point out my typos, but we're delighted to have them on as we chug along here.

HOLES;
We're going to be continuing with our Holes events in July. If you're interested in submitting an item/creature/effect from your character's canon for RNG consideration, please do so HERE, or by navigating to the comments below! Note: July's Holes are slated to be a 1-2 IC day event at most, so please keep that in mind when you submit. We can find a way to make most things work, but Holes will certainly feature as a smaller event this month, and I don't want to disappoint anyone by downsizing something huge from their canon.

Now let's get down to business!

GROUP ASSIGNMENTS/PLOTTING;
REMEMBER: As of June 2014, ALL CHARACTERS in game must be signed up for participation in an ORGANIZATONAL EFFORT OR GROUP that was established to aid the war effort. I've put up a plotting/planning post in the meme community HERE, for everyone who wants to plot with their group members! The gods leading each group have passed down some general requests for things they'd like to see accomplished each month. Of course, your character can act on that or do their own thing -- this is just meant to serve as inspiration! Remember, the leveling system has now changed. It requires now a single month of 40 comments or more, with at least ten of those comments pertaining to your character's work in his or her group. This should be a good way to help you get that under your belt!

PLOT EVENT: CHRISTMAS IN JULY;
(July 7-16/Days 475-479)

Days 475-477 (July 7-11)
Day 475 begins with a strange and unseasonable cold snap. The sunrise does little to fight the thin, harmless layer of frost that covers the city, and fat gray clouds crowd the skies by noon. Snow will fall heavily (but intermittently) over the course of the next three days, leading to high snow drifts and buildings that strain under the weight of the snowfall. Most of the Natives seem unsettled, regarding it as an omen, but the city's children seem to be glad for the change. They sled around the streets with little regard for their own safety - or the safety of the pedestrians around them. Any who leave the city will find that the temperature slowly normalizes the further one gets from Asgard, leveling out to normal about a half mile from it.

Day 477 (July 12)
When the city's clocks strike eleven PM on the night of the third consecutive snowday, the temperature makes a harsh dive as a violent snowstorm blows in without warning. It leaves little physical damage on the city, but hard pellets of sleet and hail mix with the snow. The precipitation is so heavy that visibility is practically nonexistent, and the wind blows hard enough to overturn mailboxes and tables. At precisely midnight, the electricity in all apartments and homes in the cities seems to flicker for a split second. The storm dies abruptly, and all is still.

Day 478 (July 13-14)
The weather is less bitter cold, but remains a winter wonderland. Early that morning, characters may feel as if there's something off about their reflections. The images in the mirror sometimes seem to lag by no more than a split second or two, but it's difficult to tell if such is really the case or of it's simply a trick of the light.

By eleven AM, a small army can be seen approaching Asgard, though this time they've brought friends. The group of eighty or ninety Frost Giants are preceded by glittering flecks of light overhead. They are numerous but impossible to count or even really differentiate from a distance, darting to and fro like hummingbirds. Pulling up the ranks at the rear are at least a dozen enormous golems of ice, measuring in between eight and twelve feet tall. They drag a set of two large catapults behind them. (NOTE: If a member of the City Guard would be on patrol and would like to spot/announce the approaching troops, please let me know by commenting HERE. If multiple people are interested, we'll RNG it up.)

Barely fifteen minutes after Thiazi and her cronies are spotted, all reflective surfaces in the city will warp, and she will broadcast a message to the city. She has a certain message to deliver, and this time it is not about trying to tear the city of Asgard apart.

That doesn't mean the Frost Queen is leaving peacefully, however. Following her declaration to the city, the fight begins. A small swarm of pixies descends upon the city, no more than eight inches tall and the definition of "glass cannons." Pure white and physically fragile, their specialty is creating distraction and chaos. They can create localized explosions of sound and jarringly bright light. It sounds like an enormous grounded firework, or a bomb going off. Anyone within ten feet of one of these explosions will be blinded and deafened for at least a minute, but the pixies have to rest their magic for about an hour between each explosion. While they wait, they create chaos however they can: shaking snow onto people, carrying off weapons, and attacking directly if approached without an easy exit. Their teeth are curved like fangs and razor-sharp.

These pixies do not bleed, and will disintegrate into snow if killed.

While the pixies stir the city up, the frost giants begin to load the golems up into the catapults. Two by two, the massive ice creatures come crashing - literally - into the city. They are slow but incredibly powerful, and not particularly bright on top of that. The pixies seem to lose interest around sunset (though you may find one or two hidden and sleeping in a snowbank if you look hard enough - they'll attack aggressively if woken), but the fights with the golems continue well into the night, until all in the city are dispatched. Where the pixies turn into snow, the golems transform into large hunks of ice after they are killed.

Day 479 (July 15-16)
At sunrise, the pixies ascend from their hiding places and scatter, doing their best to break into homes. If a character leaves a door unlocked or a window cracked, he may find himself awoken by the pixie's signature explosion. They grow more aggressive the thinner their ranks grow, graduating from hairpulling to outright attacks. Their bites and wicked little talons aren't enough to do mortal damage, but today, anyone who finds him or herself bitten will start to feel strange within the hour. They will become confused, overwhelmed, and may drift in and out of a mental fog for a few more hours following. While uninfected, the bites are overwarm to the touch. Characters in this state tend to lash out in anger when approached or confronted, and some even in violence. The state eventually breaks like a fever, and after the fact, characters will remember a distinct hum of power in their bodies. Starting from the bite and spreading outwards, it feels similar to the sensation of activating a god-given power in Asgard. Unlike the god powers, however, this magic feels dirty, almost rotten, and as if it is fighting your character the entire time.

Bitten characters will not be aware enough of this to communicate it until after the fact, and they will only suffer the effects of this once. After the first time, they are immune.

Ice golems continue to come crashing into the city throughout the morning. All of the original ones slain, Thiazi begins creating more on the spot: while they may be more numerous, they are weaker, and many have odd physical defects. Some are missing arms, and others have extra heads. (At least one that comes flying in will struggle to rise when it gets up, and then seem to have no sense of depth perception: hold out your weapon right, and it may just slay itself for you!)

Just before sunset, Thiazi delivers a final message and makes a hasty retreat with her entourage of frost giants. The spell responsible for the odd weather breaks the moment that she passes the threshold a half mile out, and all remaining pixies and golems in the city immediately, mid-action, turn to snow and ice.

By midnight, the city is thawed completely.

SPECIAL EVENT: TO DEFEAT THE HUNS;
(July 23-24/Day 483)

The gods' respond publicly to Thiazi's assault on the city. Last month was a good start, but there are a few more changes left to be made if we hope to see this war through. Details TBA closer to event start.

EVENT FAST-FACTS;
PLOT EVENT: Christmas in July (July 7-15/Days 475-479)
  • Days 475-477 (July 7-11): The temperature drops abruptly. Snow begins to fall, blanketing the city..
  • Day 477 (July 12): At 11PM on Day 477, a harsh snowstorm hits the city and lasts for precisely one hour.

  • Days 478-479 (July 13-16): Thiazi addresses the travelers through their mirrors, and then attacks with a small army of evil pixies and ice golems. On Day 479, any character bitten by a pixie will experience extreme disorientation, fear, and anger, before snapping out of it a few hours later. That night, Thiazi retreats, gloating.

  • More changes are in store for Asgard. Details forthcoming closer to time of the event.

Feel free to use the comments of this post for general monthly plotting!

As always, the calendar can be found HERE with OOC→IC dates, weather, and other information! Also, the test drive is up, with reserves this week and apps opening next week. If you have a friend who wants to join but is discouraged by our approaching end date, let them know that we have six months until plot end, and a few months following that until official game close. We'll be doing our best to make sure all players, new and old, will have lots of things to do as the game gears up for endgame.

Finally, a general reminder: here is our info page on the Frost Giants, for any new player who may not have encountered them before. And that's all I've got for you guys right now! If you've got any questions, please feel more than free to ask them below.

/chinhands at all of this. Iiiiii cannot brain plans but we should do something Maglor isssss I dunno if he will get bitten. He's got good aim and will be happy to kill bitey ice things?
snowstormed: to die (❄ a new life; just a better place)

[personal profile] snowstormed 2014-07-05 07:02 am (UTC)(link)
YES GOOD I vote Robb and Maglor end up working together to kill bitey ice fairies and go after them when they carry off Robb's sword and drop it into an ice golem's mouth or something

can he borrow your sword if that happens
bythewaves: (sword)

[personal profile] bythewaves 2014-07-05 08:45 am (UTC)(link)
I like this idea. Would Robb like the stupidly long longsword or the knife that is more like a dagger, Mags is happy to share either maybe he can steal a spear from the armory
snowstormed: (★ when you broke my chest)

[personal profile] snowstormed 2014-07-05 08:52 am (UTC)(link)
sword. definitely the sword. he can handle the weight. no he can't
bythewaves: (Default)

[personal profile] bythewaves 2014-07-05 09:00 am (UTC)(link)
Well he might! Mags is average height for an elf (6'5/6'6) which is tall in Tolkien world, so the sword is sized for his height, but since Feanor forged it and daddy was something of a genius I suggest that the reason he can use one hand for the sword is that it is lighter than expected by some secret forging technique =p Robb should, at least, be able to dual hand the thing
snowstormed: nonetheless and so (★ and bad ideas but ideas)

[personal profile] snowstormed 2014-07-05 09:11 am (UTC)(link)
ha, well, he's good at holding a sword two-handed as well as one-handed, so yeah, I guess he could be able to hold the thing. he'll be slightly more careful with it than with his other swords welp.

[personal profile] bythewaves 2014-07-05 10:47 am (UTC)(link)
It looks like a really fancy version of Glamdring, probably - something like the one next to Feanor's name if you want to know what it'd look like heh
snowstormed: (❄ in front of the other one)

[personal profile] snowstormed 2014-07-05 10:59 am (UTC)(link)
d a m n nice sword there, Robb's is basically a typical longsword and he'll most likely take a moment to eye up the ornamentation on it like whoa

who forged this thing
bythewaves: (Default)

[personal profile] bythewaves 2014-07-05 11:12 am (UTC)(link)
Dad. =p Current headcannon: That sword is Feanor's - when he died the sword went to the oldest son, Maedhros, who left it behind for safekeeping when he went & got captured. And then they kinda toted it around, and Maglor uses it now since he can't dual wield properly with his scarring.(those double blades with his name on them are abandoned on the battlefield somewhere)
